Obituary

Guy Steven Dull Knife, Jr. was born on May 7, 1947 in Pine Ridge, SD to Guy Steven Dull Knife, Sr. and Rose Bull Bear. Guy made his journey to the Spirit World on October 31, 2019 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD.

Born to Guy Steven Dull Knife, Sr. and Rosie Bull Bear Dull Knife. He was the only child. Doris Ghost Bear was later adopted. Guy has first cousins that survive him, Barbara Dull Knife and Dellmarie Dull Knife Bradfield, Linda Bull Bear, Daryl and Peter Mesteth as well as many other living cousins.

Guy went to school at Kyle Grade School and Oglala Community High School. Following high school, he attended Job Corps where he studied the culinary arts. Guy was an accomplished artist, well known around the world.

He voluntarily drafted into the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War. Following that, Guy worked as a police officer, EMT and fire fighter for the Oglala Sioux Tribe. For the remainder of his life, Guy was passionate about helping military veterans.
Guy was married three separate times, and from those unions he had 13 children whom he loved dearly.

A traditional Lakota man, Guy was a sun dancer, a traditional pow wow dancer and a cultural educator. He was a man who taught children from all cultures about the sacredness of Lakota culture and community. The Fort Robinson Breakout Spiritual Run was something that Guy supported each year. For a time, Guy lived in Loveland, Colorado for a time and then returned to South Dakota.

Guy became actively involved in the American Indian Movement in 1973, helping to found the Grassroots.

He was instrumental in stopping the sale of alcohol in White Clay, NE. He was involved with the Yellow Thunder Camp in the Black Hills. He was also a fighter to help stop the mining of uranium in 1980’s. Guy was involved in Camp Justice, as well. In 1974, he supported the Treaty Council meetings at the United Nations. He was Instrumental in Leonard Peltier’s defense committee; Guy leaves a legacy of being actively involved in humanitarian causes.

Passionate about clean water, Guy embodied the 13 Lakota values every day of his life and served as camp leader at Oceti Sakowin, Standing Rock, which ignited a worldwide movement dedicated to protecting sacred waters of life.


Guy is survived by his wife, Angie Dull Knife of Kyle, SD; children, Dawn Marie (Dennison) Teller of Farmington, NM, Terri (Carl) Moran, Tonya (William) Bettelyoun, and Tonette (Bobby Howe) Dull Knife all of Wanblee, SD, Guy Steven Dull Knife III of Kyle, SD, Danielle Dull Knife of West Laco, TX, David Gay of Porcupine, SD, Tara Dull Knife and George Dull Knife both of Kyle, SD, Carla Dull Knife of Rapid City, SD, Jamie Dull Knife of Wanblee, SD, Jeffery Dull Knife and Daniel Dull Knife both of Rapid City, SD; hunka children, Crystal Dull Knife and Ronald Dull Knife both of Wanblee, SD, and Aldo Hinojosa of Martin, SD; step-children, Rachel Akers of Blythedale, MO, Heather Corum of Ridgeway, MO, and John Garr of St. Joseph MO; a special thanks to his service dog, Oreo; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Guy was preceded in death by his parents, Guy, Sr. and Rose Dull Knife; daughter, Mary Dull Knife; and sister, Doris Ghost Bear.

Pallbearers will be Hank Means, Ed Randall, James Two Crow, James McDonald, Johnny Aseron, Marlin Under Baggage, Frank Thunder Horse, and Donnie Pourier.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dye Masaki, Frances White Bird, Eli Cane, Jeremy Williams, Dicky & Deanna Marshall, Michael Martin Murphy, All AIM Members, All Veterans, AIM Grassroots, All Water Protectors, Northern Cheyenne Tribe, and All Friends, Family, & Relatives.
